She stared out the window, the cityscape a blur of grey. The new hire, a young man fresh out of college, sat opposite her, his notepad poised. She was supposed to be showing him the ropes. She was supposed to be helpful and friendly.

Instead, a feeling of deep discontent gnawed at her insides. It was a cold, sharp pain that settled in her stomach. She felt as though something vital had been stolen from her. The sense of unfairness was overwhelming.

She finally turned back. "Okay," she said, her voice flat and emotionless. "Let’s begin." She pointed to the computer screen with a jerky movement of her finger.
