The silence in the car was thick, oppressive. Michael gripped the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles were white. The highway stretched before him, a ribbon of asphalt leading nowhere. He punched the dashboard lightly, the dull thud doing little to alleviate the tension.

He pictured Sarah, her triumphant smile, the way she effortlessly navigated any social situation. He increased the speed, pushing the car faster, faster. He needed to *escape* this feeling, to drive it away.
