The vibrant colors of the decorations seemed to mock her. She felt a knot in her stomach, a tight, unrelenting pressure that refused to loosen. The cheerful chatter of the other guests sounded like a relentless buzz, a noise that assaulted her ears.

She found herself gripping her glass of wine so tightly that her knuckles were white. The wine itself tasted bitter, its usually pleasant flavor lost to the storm inside her. He was laughing, the sound carrying across the room, a sound that she used to adore.

She needed an escape. Excusing herself from the conversation, she abruptly made her way toward the exit, the ornate doors seeming miles away.
