A muscle in Kevin's jaw twitched. He leaned against the counter, the cool tile doing nothing to soothe the heat that burned through him. Mr. Blackwood. The man who had made his high school years a battleground. He felt his hands clench into fists.

He pictured his son, Ethan, eager and excited for his first day. He felt a wave of protective rage. He felt sick to his stomach. He didn’t want Ethan to endure the same humiliation, the same feeling of inadequacy that had been his constant companions during that time.

He pushed away from the counter, every movement jerky, sharp. He felt the need to escape, to run, to smash something. His mind was already formulating a plan.
