The phone slipped from Elias's sweaty palm, clattering against the kitchen tiles. He stared at the screen, the words "Cancelled" still burning into his vision. Months of planning, of anticipation, of subtly dropping hints about how much he was looking forward to his birthday, all for nothing. He kicked the nearest chair, the flimsy wood splintering under the force. A vein in his temple throbbed. He stalked to the window, shoving the curtains aside. The world outside seemed mocking, indifferent to his gutted disappointment. He slammed his fist against the cold glass, knuckles whitening.
