The card was tucked inside a bundle of junk mail, a splash of color in the sea of white. He picked it up, his fingers tracing the generic, store-bought design. A hollow ache settled in his stomach. The words inside were perfunctory, devoid of any genuine feeling. He felt a cold, hard knot form in his gut.

He threw the card on the kitchen table, the flimsy paper fluttering for a moment before settling. He went to the window, watching the rain streak down the glass. The grey sky mirrored the bleakness inside him. He wanted to shatter something, to break free of this suffocating feeling.
