The café’s music, always a pleasant distraction, now felt like an irritating background noise. He’d been sitting here, waiting for “Laura”, anticipating their afternoon together. Now, across from him, sat another man. Both of them, sharing the same awkward silence and shock.

He wanted to shout. He wanted to throw his coffee at the wall. The waiter had come over, bewildered. "Are you two together?"

He gave a dry chuckle. "No. Apparently, we're not." He felt his muscles tense.
