The crisp white envelope felt like a brand on her palm. She squeezed it, the paper crinkling under the pressure, the sound a small, satisfying crackle. High school reunion. After all this time. She threw it across the kitchen, watching it skitter to a stop against the refrigerator. The chipped ceramic tile gleamed in the harsh fluorescent light, mocking her.

Her jaw clenched, a muscle jumping in her cheek. It had been years since she'd thought about them, about that place. Now, here it was, a tangible reminder of everything she'd tried so hard to leave behind. She slammed the cupboard door, the sudden noise echoing in the otherwise silent room.

She took a deep, shuddering breath, her chest tightening. The email had been more than enough. This thing, this physical manifestation of it all, felt like a personal affront.
