The realtor’s saccharine smile was the last straw. It was as if she was reveling in the destruction. Amelia’s hands trembled as she signed the papers. Each stroke of the pen felt like a betrayal. The air in the cramped office felt tight, suffocating.

She barely registered the agent’s parting platitudes. She wanted to scream, to lash out.

Outside, she walked past the house she knew so well, now looking like an abandoned dollhouse. Tears pricked at her eyes, but she refused to let them fall. She would not give them the satisfaction.
