The punch bowl threatened to tip as she slammed it down. “Unbelievable,” she hissed under her breath. David, her boyfriend, had somehow managed to completely overlook her birthday when making his plans. A party? On the same day? The blood was pounding in her ears.

She felt a tremor in her hands as she reached for the phone. This was not the time for pleasantries, for sugar-coating. This required directness. She needed him to understand the extent of his mistake.

She stormed out of the kitchen, her movements abrupt and hurried. The house felt too small, too confining. Each step felt like a stomp. She felt a bitter taste in her mouth.
