The email arrived, a cold and impersonal notification of a meeting. The subject line, "Professional Networking," was the first sign. David had been expecting this. He knew it was a long shot, chasing after Sarah's memory, but he'd hoped. They’d spent summers together, inseparable, before life tore them apart.

He’d read the email, the words blurring before his eyes. It was a formal request, a business proposal from someone who didn't remember the tree swings, the scraped knees, the shared secrets whispered under the cover of night.

His breath hitched, and he stared at the screen, clenching his fists until his nails bit into his palms. He wanted to delete the email, to obliterate the connection, to pretend this digital ghost didn't exist. He stood up, pacing the small apartment. He felt a need to break something.
