He’d seen her across the crowded supermarket, a flash of red hair in the produce aisle. Mark had been about to call out, to shout her name across the chasm of time, but he saw her, and for her, he was just another stranger.

He followed her from aisle to aisle, his footsteps heavy and dragging. She was so close, yet an ocean apart. He watched her select apples, her face serene, and felt a surge of something hot and sharp, coursing through his veins.

His fingers tightened around the handle of his shopping basket until his knuckles were white. He wanted to confront her, to force her to see him, to remember. But the thought of her polite, blank expression, the polite emptiness in her eyes, held him back.
