The attic air hung thick and dusty, catching in Eleanor’s throat. She slammed the lid of the trunk closed, the wood groaning in protest. Another lie. Just like all the others. A photograph, clutched in her hand, depicted her grandmother, the saintly matriarch, arm in arm with a man who wasn't her grandfather, laughing uproariously at some unseen joke. Her knuckles were white. Her grandmother had always painted a picture of a perfect marriage, a beacon of familial stability. A bitter laugh escaped her. This whole family was built on a foundation of carefully constructed falsehoods.

She tossed the photo onto the growing pile of evidence. Each image, each faded smile, a fresh betrayal. The attic seemed to shrink, the silence pressing in on her. The more she found, the more the world twisted.

Eleanor's heart thumped a frenzied rhythm against her ribs. She felt the sudden urge to break something, anything.
