The library was silent, the only sound the rustle of paper. Caroline, sifting through her deceased husband's belongings, found a letter he wrote to his mother. She picked it up and read the words, and a deep-seated ache took hold of her. The words, filled with unspoken pain, pierced her.

The letter was a plea for understanding, a cry of the heart, full of unvoiced grievances. She felt a burning sensation in her chest, like a tight band constricting her breath. Her hands trembled as she set the letter down, and then picked it up again, and then slammed it on the table.

She rose from the chair and walked out, seeking the cool night air.
