From the moment the news hit his inbox, Michael's carefully cultivated calm dissolved. His teeth ground together with a low, constant pressure. The university cafeteria, once a welcome escape, became a place of noise and irritation. The chatter of other students grated on his ears.

He shoved his lunch tray across the table, the clatter echoing in the crowded room. He wanted to lash out, to blame someone, anyone. He picked at his food, the once-familiar flavors now repulsive. He left most of it untouched.
