The news felt like a physical blow. The sudden, unwelcome information caused a knot to form in Amelia’s stomach. She felt a burning pressure behind her eyes, the familiar precursor to tears she refused to shed. She clenched her hands into fists, her nails digging into her palms.

She wanted to call him, to scream at him, to demand an explanation. But the words wouldn't come. Instead, she sat frozen, staring blankly at her computer screen, the cursor blinking mockingly on a blank document.
