He stared, the blood draining from his face. The vibrant green leaves he'd envisioned swaying gently in the wind, replaced by a raw, exposed surface. A coldness settled into his bones, a feeling of betrayal. He felt a tightening in his throat, a struggle to breathe.

He had spent hours, meticulously caring for that tree. Each watering, each pruned branch, a gesture of love. He could feel tears pricking his eyes, but he refused to let them fall. His hands clenched into fists at his sides.

“This is… unbelievable,” he managed, his voice barely a whisper. He wanted to explode, to shatter everything around him.
