The email arrived, titled with the detached neutrality of a corporate memo. He read the subject line and his hands, which had been resting comfortably in his lap, shot out, clutching at the air. The subject matter felt like a punch to the gut.

He clicked the link, the webpage loading at a snail's pace. Each picture was like a pinprick, each detail a jab. The pristine lawn, the manicured flowerbeds – nothing like how he remembered it. Where was the chaos, the laughter, the life?

His vision blurred. He was so close to smashing the monitor. He closed the laptop. The urge to break something simmered in his veins.
