The photograph, professionally lit and blandly appealing, stared back at her. The house, her childhood home, was now a commodity. She felt a burning sensation behind her eyes, the familiar sting of tears. She had no time for this.

She leaned back in her chair, the sudden movement causing the frame to rattle and shudder. Her fingers drummed a frantic rhythm against the desk. She knew the layout of that house better than her own body.

She considered calling the realtor. Demanding to know who had put it up for sale. Demanding to know how they dared. She pushed the thought away, finding the idea too exhausting.
