He gripped the steering wheel, knuckles bone white, the car’s interior suddenly stifling. A vein throbbed in his temple as he reviewed the statement one last time. Thirty thousand dollars. A silent accumulation of funds, completely unknown to him. The betrayal was crushing.

He roared down the highway, exceeding the speed limit. The world around him blurred into a meaningless rush of color. His jaw was clenched, his teeth grinding. His wife, Emily, was always so generous, so open with their finances. He had trusted her implicitly.
