"Oh, *now* he's offering to help," Mark muttered under his breath, watching as Mr. Callahan, the man who lived in the opulent estate on the hill, strolled over with a plate of cookies. Just last week, Mark had had to choose between groceries and paying the electricity bill. Callahan, with his flawless tan and easy smile, had never offered a thing. He took a long drag of his cigarette, the smoke curling into the air. He turned his back on the neighbor and walked back inside, the uninvited offer settling in his stomach like lead.
