Liam kicked the trash can across the quad, the dented metal clanging against the brick pathway. He watched it roll, a small, pathetic symbol of his escalating frustration. All the work, all the striving, and for what? To have the rug yanked out from under him in his final year? He couldn't believe the audacity of it. The institution, the bastards running it, the sheer *gall* of sending an email like that.

He stuffed his hands into his pockets, the rough denim doing little to contain the tremors that were beginning to wrack his frame. Every fiber of his being was electrified, a current of pure, undirected energy. He pictured the university president, a smug, self-satisfied man, and gritted his teeth, a sound like gravel grinding together.
