The list was tucked inside a forgotten book about space travel, a subject Emily knew her partner, David, adored. It was neat and tidy: “See the Northern Lights.” “Build a rocket.” “Become a dad.” A dad? She read the last line again. Her breath caught in her throat.

She tossed the book across the room. It landed with a soft thud against the wall. She sat there, staring at the book, unmoving. He never even mentioned it. She didn't want him building anything with her.

She rose, and walked into the bedroom. She needed to do some cleaning. He was never around to pick up after himself. She started by gathering his things from the floor. Each item she picked up was an offence to her. She threw everything into a box.
