“Of all the damn essays to choose…” he muttered, the words laced with gravel. He’d discovered the article while idly browsing the university’s website, a website he’d long abandoned. It was, of course, the one he had written about his battle with depression.

He reread the words, the familiar sting of shame returning. His stomach churned. He saw the gleam on the faces of people who would read it. The pity. The judgment. The condescension.

He slammed his fist on his desk, the sound echoing in the empty office. He found himself pacing. He felt a tremor in his hands, a frantic energy that made him want to smash something. He felt the impulse to rip apart the world.
