The artist, Jasper, found the message in his Instagram messages. He ignored them usually, but today, a curiosity drove him to click. The photo in the message was enough to make him freeze.

Someone had tattooed his “Rebirth” onto their back. The curve of it, the color, the detailing. All perfect. The artist’s mouth thinned into a hard line. His fists clenched.

He stared at the photo. He felt a deep unease, the kind that settled into the pit of your stomach and wouldn’t let go. He closed the app, and switched off his phone, and wandered around the house, trying to find a way to distract himself.
