"Unbelievable," Clara muttered, the word barely audible. She reread the message on her phone, the words swimming before her eyes. "Good luck with your future endeavors." A completely impersonal farewell. She tossed the phone onto the plush office carpet. She’d rearranged her entire schedule, prepared her own future, all based on the mentorship she was promised. A wave of bitter frustration washed over her. She paced the room, unable to settle. She snatched up a small decorative paperweight and hurled it into the wall.
