She stared at the email, the words blurring before her eyes. “Unfortunately, we have offered the position to another candidate…” She reread it, each word a hammer blow against her chest. She had prepared so hard, sacrificed so much.

She slammed her laptop shut, the sound echoing in the empty apartment. She wanted to throw something, break something. She picked up a ceramic mug, her favorite one, and hurled it against the wall. It shattered.

She sank to the floor, wrapping her arms around her knees. She felt a burning sensation in her throat, a pressure that threatened to erupt. She hated this. She hated everything.
