The band’s rendition of “At Last” was awful. The singer was off-key, the tempo too slow. The whole experience was, to put it mildly, infuriating. The wedding party was getting ready to start the dances and the excitement in the room was almost too much.

Across the room, Emily was laughing at something her friend said. It was that laugh that had always grated on Ben’s nerves. Now, it felt like an acid burn. He clenched his jaw.

He abruptly turned and marched towards the exit, ignoring the confused glances of his tablemates. He needed to get out.
