"So, you have Ms. Thompson, huh?" Kevin asked his daughter, trying to sound encouraging. The corners of his mouth twitched involuntarily.

His daughter’s excited chatter filled the kitchen as she described her new teacher. Kevin kept nodding, but his thoughts were elsewhere, back to the memory of Ms. Thompson, the woman who’d once accused him of cheating on a history test. He could almost feel the phantom sting of her disapproving glare.

He abruptly stood and started washing dishes with unnecessary vigor. His hands moved quickly, the water splashing against the sink. He couldn't shake the image of her face.
