The aroma of pot roast, a scent that normally comforted Chloe, was now tainted by a sense of foreboding. Her mother, perched at the kitchen table, was meticulously sorting through a stack of old homework assignments. “Remember this, Chloe? Your winning science project!”

Chloe stared at the meticulously constructed volcano made of cardboard and baking soda. A bitter taste filled her mouth. She didn't want to remember. The whole thing made her feel uncomfortable.

She picked at the edge of her plate, her appetite gone. She just wanted to leave.
