The news landed like a lead weight in Carol's stomach. She was being shuffled to the legal department. "Excellent," she drawled, the word devoid of any emotion.

She stared out the window, the city skyline appearing hazy through the rain-streaked glass. She pinched the bridge of her nose. The new department was going to be difficult.

She imagined endless meetings, complex jargon, and mountains of paperwork. Her hands clenched into fists, the nails digging into her palms. The thought alone was enough to make her want to scream.
