"Are you KIDDING me?" Maya sputtered into the phone, her voice sharp enough to cut glass. She’d spent all afternoon baking a three-tiered cake, painstakingly decorated with edible glitter. The thought of it, now destined for the bin, sent a shiver of frustration through her. She slammed the phone down, the plastic receiver rattling against the counter. Her hands, dusted with flour, balled into fists. The aroma of buttercream frosting, which had earlier been a source of joy, now turned her stomach. She ripped off her apron, the action more violent than necessary, and tossed it onto the overflowing sink.
