The card was tucked between a flyer for a pizza place and a utility bill. Sarah snatched it up, her lips pursed. Another one. They kept coming. She ripped open the envelope, a sharp movement that made her knuckles pop. Inside, a generic watercolor of a cupcake, and a blank space for a signature. Fantastic.

She slammed the card onto the kitchen counter. The cheap paper crumpled slightly. Of all the things. She’d been waiting for the plumber all morning, and now this… this drivel. Her stomach tightened. Maybe she should just throw the thing away and ignore it. But something prickly, like a vine coiling in her chest, wouldn't let her.
