The realtor’s voice, honeyed and fake, grated on David’s ears. His sister, Emily, was practically skipping around the living room, exclaiming over every cobweb-laden knick-knack.

“Isn’t it charming?” she chirped, her eyes sparkling. David just wanted to be anywhere else.

He ran a hand through his hair, a nervous gesture he hadn't realized he was making until the afternoon. The entire thing was weighing him down. He glanced at the faded floral wallpaper, the threadbare carpet, and the sense of impending doom was palpable.
