The afternoon sun cast long shadows across the overgrown garden. Inside, the house felt even more stifling. John was sprawled on the floor, flipping through old photo albums, while his sister, Mary, meticulously examined the cracked tiles in the hallway.

He groaned inwardly. She always had to scrutinize everything. He hated the way she was picking apart the house, it felt like she was dissecting their childhood.

He slammed the album shut, the sound echoing through the empty rooms. He just wanted to go home.
