He glared at the blinking cursor on his phone screen. Years, decades even, of comfortable certainty suddenly felt… wrong. His DNA test results had come back. He was adopted. *Adopted*. His birth mother was listed as "Unknown". He felt like kicking something.

The coffee on the counter was lukewarm and bitter, an accurate reflection of his mood. He grabbed the remote and flicked through channels, but nothing held his attention. He tossed the remote onto the sofa with a thud.

The whole thing was ludicrous. He had always known his parents loved him. Now, he imagined he saw looks, whispers, and hidden glances in the memories of his childhood. He had to sit down. He felt a throbbing pulse in his temples.
