He shoved the DNA test results back into the envelope with a violent snap. The pristine white paper suddenly seemed offensive, mocking his carefully constructed reality. It was a blow to his sense of self. He’d always felt like a carbon copy of his father, the same stubborn streak, the same love for baseball. Now, all that felt… fraudulent.

He strode over to the window, staring out at the rain-slicked street. The world outside seemed blurry, unfocused, mirroring the sudden haze in his own mind. He ran a hand through his hair, a gesture he’d seen his father do a hundred times. Was that even *his* gesture?

"Ridiculous," he muttered under his breath, clenching his jaw. He could feel heat creeping up his neck.
