The bitter taste of coffee lingered in Coach Peterson’s mouth, a fitting metaphor for the situation. He stared out the window, watching the rain lash against the practice field. He’d just finished the most unpleasant phone call of his career. He had to tell young David that he wasn’t going to start. The kid had a promising future. Now, thanks to the politics, it was all for naught.

He let out a short, frustrated sigh and picked up the phone. He had to make another call now. He rubbed his temples.
