The musty air of the basement clung to Leo like a shroud. He’d promised his wife, Jessica, he’d go through the old files. Now he found himself staring at a stack of unorganized documents, the task feeling impossible. He picked up a manila envelope. Inside, he found a letter, addressed to his college roommate, written in his own, youthful handwriting.

He ripped it open. “Dear Kevin…” he read, a wave of something akin to shame washing over him. The words, filled with youthful boasts and insecurities, were like a slap in the face. “I’m constantly fighting with…” He tossed it back onto the pile with a disgusted sound. His jaw clenched. He’d deal with the rest of this later. He headed upstairs, needing fresh air.
