He stared at the email, the words blurring together. "Congratulations to…" The sentence seemed to stretch out, mocking him with its length. He closed his eyes, inhaling deeply, trying to calm the sudden, sharp pang in his chest. His rival, Lisa, the darling of upper management, had gotten it.

He pushed his chair back, the squeak of the wheels amplifying the silence. The office felt like a cage. He was stuck.

He got up and went to the window, staring out at the cityscape, feeling an overwhelming sense of frustration. It was like he was running in place.
