The air in the coffee shop felt thick, heavy with the aroma of roasted beans and unspoken words. "California?" Alex repeated, his brow furrowed. He watched as Sam, his best friend, practically vibrated with excitement.

He felt a tightness in his chest, a sense of constriction that made it difficult to breathe. The cafe, usually a place of comfort and shared laughter, suddenly felt like a cage. He took a sip of his coffee, the bitter liquid doing little to soothe his rising agitation.

He stared out the window, at the passing cars and the oblivious pedestrians. He wanted to scream, to demand that Sam change his mind, but the words wouldn't come.
