He tapped the letter against his chin, a rhythmic gesture that revealed his agitation. The thick, creamy paper seemed to mock him. It was from his former mentor, Professor Davies, finally admitting his role in sabotaging his research proposal. Twenty years, and now this. A wave of anger washed over him, hot and bitter. He rose from his chair, pacing the room, the worn floorboards creaking under his weight. He felt a deep, instinctive aversion to Davies and the letter. He went over to the fireplace, grabbed the letter and burned it, the flames reflecting in his eyes.
