The weight of the old house pressed down on him, and the family photos on the wall seemed to mock him. His sister, Rose, the owner of a successful chain of restaurants, could barely contain her excitement. She was going to start expanding. The lawyer continued, "And for Samuel, a collection of old cookbooks and a small, unprofitable garden."

Samuel stared at the lawyer, then back at Rose, who was now texting someone on her phone. He imagined himself, pulling weeds, his hands covered in dirt, while she was travelling. He knew he'd have to make the most of it. He sighed softly and ran a hand through his hair.
