Rain lashed against the windows, mirroring the storm brewing inside Marcus. He reread the letter, the words blurring through a sudden haze. *“Your father… another child… a daughter…”* He crumpled the paper in his fist, the edges digging into his palm.

He threw it towards the fireplace, the unlit logs offering no comfort. His apartment, usually a sanctuary of calm, felt like a cage. He slumped onto the sofa, the cushions doing little to soften the weight pressing on his shoulders. He needed a drink. Or maybe a long, solitary walk in the downpour.
