The sunset painted the sky in fiery hues, a beauty entirely lost on Chloe. She gripped the steering wheel so tightly her knuckles were white. The project presentation was tomorrow. She’d envisioned herself, the star, the innovator. But then she’d received the email. And now, she felt a burning sensation in her stomach.

She had to meet him at the cafe. She parked the car, and took a deep, shaky breath before getting out. The air felt thick. He was already there, hunched over his laptop.

“Well,” she said, her voice sharp as she approached, “this is a coincidence.”
