“Are you kidding me?” Elias barked, the words escaping his lips before he could stop them. He threw his textbook onto the hardwood floor, the impact echoing through the small apartment. The university was closing. All of his planning, all of his hard work, felt like it was crumbling.

He paced the length of the living room, his hands clenched into fists. He had scrimped and saved, gone without countless luxuries, all for this education. And now, it was gone.

He kicked a discarded pizza box across the room, his frustration reaching a boiling point. The air in the room crackled with tension, the silence punctuated only by the pounding of his own heart.
