"It's just a few weeks," she told herself, her voice barely a whisper. The drilling had begun again, and the house seemed to vibrate in sympathy. The sound was like a physical pressure, squeezing the air from her lungs.

She walked from window to window, tracing the cracks that had appeared in the walls, as if searching for an escape. Her breath came in short, shallow gasps. She clutched her chest, attempting to soothe the frantic beating of her heart.

The thought of confronting the situation seemed impossible. She sank into a chair, the noise washing over her, a constant, unrelenting wave. She had to get through this, somehow.
