He found the denial letter tucked amongst the bills, a stark white rectangle that instantly stood out. He picked it up slowly, his fingers unusually clumsy. He didn't want to open it. He didn't want to know. But curiosity, and dread, won out.

The letter's formal tone seemed to mock him. The scholarship, his one shot, gone. He crumpled the paper in his fist. He felt a burning in his eyes, but refused to let the tears fall.

He moved to the kitchen, aimlessly opening and closing cabinets. He needed to *do* something, anything to quell the feeling bubbling up inside him. The world suddenly felt unstable, as if the ground beneath his feet was constantly shifting.
