The thought of walking over and speaking to his neighbor sent a wave of dizziness through him. He pictured the conversation, the inevitable questions, the potential for disagreement. He felt a cold sweat break out on his forehead.

He retreated to his garden, tugging at weeds with desperate intensity. The physical exertion was a welcome distraction, but the problem lingered. The fence loomed in his mind, a looming threat.

He felt a profound sense of foreboding, a certainty that something terrible was about to happen. He wanted to disappear, to vanish into the earth. The thought of facing his neighbor was simply too much.
