The coffee tasted like ash in his mouth. He’d barely slept last night, tossing and turning, haunted by the looming meeting. He sat across from his replacement, a young woman with a ponytail and an unsettlingly enthusiastic demeanor. The air in the small office felt thick, heavy, as though a storm were about to break.

He’d spent the last seven years building his career here. He knew every corner of the company, every client’s name, every potential problem. And now, he was supposed to hand it all over, to reveal the secrets he'd accumulated. The responsibility felt immense, crushing.

"Okay," he said, his voice barely a whisper. "So, you'll want to start with the quarterly reports..." He forced a smile, but the muscles in his face felt stiff, unnatural. His stomach churned with a mixture of dread and something akin to quiet desperation. He watched her as she typed, the tapping of the keys a persistent, irritating percussion in his ears.
